Innovative Soil Conditioning through Student Hands-On Training in Carbonized Rice Hull (CRH) Production at MSU-Sulu IFPC
SDG: 2: Zero hunger | Posted by: Prof. Abubakar J. Radjuni | Posted: October 22, 2025
On May 13, 2024, students of the MSU-Sulu College of Agriculture engaged in a hands-on learning activity at the Integrated Farming and Production Center (IFPC), focusing on the preparation of Carbonized Rice Hull (CRH) as a potting medium for seed sowing and seedling production. CRH, produced from the controlled carbonization of rice hulls, is rich in essential nutrients such as Phosphorus (P), Potassium (K), Calcium (Ca), Magnesium (Mg), and other vital micronutrients that improve soil fertility and crop growth. This initiative strongly supports SDG 2 (Zero Hunger) by enhancing crop productivity, SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) by recycling agricultural by-products into valuable soil conditioners, SDG 13 (Climate Action) by reducing agricultural waste and promoting eco-friendly practices, and SDG 15 (Life on Land) by contributing to sustainable soil management and biodiversity conservation. Through this practical training, MSU-Sulu continues to empower students with sustainable farming skills while advancing its mission toward resilient, climate-smart agriculture.
