Student Experiential Training on Vermicast Fertilizer Application for Sustainable Soil Fertility and Crop Growth at MSU-Sulu IFPC
SDG: 2: Zero hunger | Posted by: Prof. Abubakar J. Radjuni | Posted: October 22, 2025
On May 12, 2024, students of the MSU-Sulu College of Agriculture engaged in a hands-on learning activity at the Integrated Farming and Production Center (IFPC), exploring the preparation and application of vermicast fertilizer to enhance soil fertility and plant growth. Vermicast, produced through earthworm decomposition of organic matter, is a nutrient-rich, eco-friendly biofertilizer that promotes sustainable crop production. This initiative directly advances SDG 2 (Zero Hunger) by supporting food security through improved yields, SDG 4 (Quality Education) by equipping students with practical agricultural skills, SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) by recycling organic waste into valuable inputs, SDG 13 (Climate Action) by mitigating the environmental footprint of chemical fertilizers, and SDG 15 (Life on Land) by sustaining soil health and biodiversity. Through this training, MSU-Sulu reaffirms its commitment to integrating sustainability into agricultural education and practice, preparing students to be future stewards of resilient farming systems.
