Mindanao State University (MSU) Sulu, formerly known as MSU-Sulu Development and Technical College (SDTC), was founded in 1974 to rehabilitate the educational landscape of Sulu. Initially, classes were held at the grandstand of an elementary school, with the office located at the residence of then COMELEC Commissioner Hashim R. Abubakar. Through the efforts of founding Director Exuan T. Dagbusan and the support of provincial officials, the Sulu Provincial Board passed Resolution No. 64, Series 1974, donating an 11.5-hectare lot for the campus. The current campus site is approximately 1.3 kilometers from Jolo town proper.
